The municipal area of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar was already inhabited by people in prehistoric times. Excavations confirm a settlement starting around 2000 BC. Only from the late Roman period are there some records that also provide information about the sonorous name Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, which was also maintained during the Moorish period. However, the addition of Cardassar to the name was only received by the town after the Reconquista. When Jaume I occupied the island with his army, a Madonna figure revealed itself in a field near Sant Llorenç that had been hidden in the thistle bushes during the rule of the Moors. The miraculous find of Mare de Deú dels Cards, the "Thistle Madonna", gave the town its sonorous nickname with its prickly addition of Cardassar (which means "among the thistles" in English).
